WET AND DRY PRODUCTS

Just as people have individual taste preferences, so do cats. Some cats like the flavour and texture of wet foods, whereas others prefer the flavour and texture of dry foods. Either or both can serve as an appropriate diet for your cat.

Due to their flavour and soft texture, wet foods can be very appealing to cats. Dry foods on the other hand, offer benefits of convenience and freshness, as well as helping to keep their teeth clean.

While important on any diet, if you are feeding a combination of both wet and dry foods, you will also need to pay special attention to your cat’s dental care. Wet foods are very palatable, although, due to their soft texture, they do not have a mechanical action on the teeth and do not help to reduce tartar or plaque build-up. Dry foods, due to their hard texture, help keep teeth clean and gums healthy.

Another thing to keep in mind, especially during the summer months, is that dry food will stay fresh and appealing in the bowl for extended periods of time. If wet food is left in your cat's bowl, it will tend to dry out and spoil after several hours, which will have a negative impact on palatability and a cat's desire to eat it. This is why unused portions of wet food should always be refrigerated to maintain freshness.

Wet food's other benefit is that it is a good source of moisture. As a species that originated in a desert environment, cats generally drink less water than other animals and can be prone to urinary stones. Moisture in food can help prevent these,

The nutritional differences between wet and dry

  • Wet products are less concentrated in energy and nutrients and highly palatable, thus they are particularly beneficial for cats who have a tendency to gain weight or who do not exercise a lot.
  • Wet products are higher in water content and are particularly beneficial to cats, which as a species, have a traditionally low level of spontaneous water consumption.
  • Wet products have the advantage of being able to offer a diverse array of textures and flavours to satisfy varying taste preferences.
  • PRO PLAN wet range is formulated with the same nutrient levels per 1000 kcal as the PRO PLAN dry equivalent.
  • PRO PLAN wet range offers the same 100% complete and balanced nutrition that the dry range offers.
