PRO PLAN SCIENCE

Overview

Where scientists apply the power of nutrition to enhance every aspect of pet health and care.

As part of the Purina Pet Institute, our 60,000+ square-foot research facility houses state-of-the-art equipment for its work in areas such as molecular biology, genomics, immunology, cell physiology, food processing, and food and aroma chemistry.

In addition to the staff at our world headquarters in St. Louis, Purina scientists and nutritionists can be found around the globe, including facilities in Brazil, Mexico, England, France and Australia.

Together, these professionals apply new ways of thinking to bring you innovative diets that are truly breakthroughs in the management and prevention of disease. In fact, thanks to our leading edge research and development efforts, Purina was:

  • The first to use low-molecular weight protein to control canine food allergies
  • The first to formulate a diet that works with a cat's unique metabolism to dramatically reduce insulin requirements in some diabetics cats
  • The first to incorporate medium-chain triglycerides in canine diets to relieve gastrointestinal distress
  • The first to use high protein levels to sustain lean body mass during weight loss
  • Best of all, when important findings are made during the development of one of our Purina Veterinary Diets formulas, this new knowledge is applied to enhance the nutrition of all of our brands.

Of course, our research and development efforts don't stop with innovative nutrition. Purina's scientists also explore new ways to ensure:

  • Raw ingredients meeting rigid quality standards
  • Consistency in manufacturing
  • Product freshness
  • Packaging safety
  • Product integrity through warehousing and transportation systems
  • High palatability
