DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

The digestive system works to protect your cat in two ways. First, by digesting and absorbing essential nutrients that can be utilised by the other three protective systems. Secondly, in addition to acting as an important physical barrier, it also provides critical immunological defences against bacteria and toxins attempting to enter the body from the outside world.

In fact, the digestive system is the primary site for the body’s immune system response, containing as much as 70% of all the body’s immune cells.

PRO PLAN’s special formula delivers essential nutrients known to help nourish the feline gastro-intestinal tract and promote its protective functions.

  • Wholesome cereal grains and rice
For easy digestibility and to promote optimal uptake of nutrients and support an optimal balance of beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract.
  • High quality meat, fish and egg proteins
Cellular turnover occurs approximately every 3 days in the small intestine. The energy and nutrients needed to support new cell growth are considerable and the digestive system needs quality protein and amino acids. Cats are unique in requiring a much greater intake of dietary protein compared to most other species: about 34% of dietary calories. High protein levels (>36% for the PRO PLAN range) will help promote gut cell development and performance.
  • Essential fatty acids
Critical to help maintain membrane integrity and functionality of the cells in the gastro-intestinal tract. Any weakness in membrane integrity of these cells can lead to inefficient absorption of nutrients and poor protective barrier function.
  • Dietary Fibre
Fermentable dietary fibres serve as a substrate for the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). SCFAs provide an energy source for cells of the intestinal mucosa, stimulate colonic blood flow, and promote growth and cell turnover in the lower intestines. In addition, SCFAs help lower the pH of intestinal contents, which inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria.
