SKIN AND COAT
The skin is the main organ through which the body interacts with the environment. Both the skin and hair coat have a variety of protective functions ranging from providing an enclosed barrier for the rest of the body to immunological defences against bacteria and toxins attempting to enter the body from the outside world. The skin protects the body by limiting water loss to the environment, delaying or preventing entry of undesirable agents, and withstanding physical trauma.
PRO PLAN’s special formula delivers essential nutrients known to help nourish and support the cells of the skin and the hair coat, maximising their protective function.
- High quality meat, fish and egg
Hair is approximately 95% protein. Tyrosine, one of the amino acids found in protein, is needed for pigmentation of the hair. Pigmentation of both hair and skin offers a form of protection against UV light. As much as 25-30% of the daily requirement for protein is allocated to the skin to support the renewal and regeneration of skin and hair and maintain appropriate skin thickness. - Marine oils
The functions of fatty acids in the skin include providing structural support of cell membranes for a thick coat, and helping the normal functions of the skin (such as sebum production) to sustain healthy looking skin, without flakiness, and a strong glossy coat. - Vitamin A and Zinc
Because of the abundance of epithelial cells in the skin, vitamin A is important in skin maintenance and cellular turnover for proper thickness of the skin. Zinc is also key in the metabolism of vitamin A and biosynthesis of fatty acids. - Vitamin E and Selenium
Vitamin E works in conjunction with selenium to scavenge free radicals. Skin is the primary barrier for blocking UV light rays. UV rays can produce harmful free radicals in the skin; therefore, vitamin E and selenium are important in protecting the skin.
